The town of Arras is located about an hour’s drive from Lille. We spent the afternoon walking the cobblestone streets and checking out the Flemish architecture. There are two places, the Place des Héros and the Grand Place. Both are surrounded by Flemish style row houses. Another interesting structure is the Abbaye de Saint-Vaast and the Palais de Beaux Arts, which are connected. Arras was a battle site during the second world war and the façade of the Abbaye is still pockmarked with bullet holes. A number of English and Australian soldiers were killed in Arras during the war and there are several monuments to them.
